Advanced Squad (G5* and over)
The final stage of the GIS competitive swim programme. Primarily MYP.
Swimmers should have an excellent command and understanding of all 4 strokes,
starts, turns, rules. Swimmers should be able to follow a prescribed varied set
from the board with limited explanation. Work may be differentiated where
appropriate for younger swimmers. High level of fitness and self-discipline.
Please note that the lower age limit takes into consideration
physical and emotional maturity, fitness, strength and technical competency and
therefore has some flexibility. The
upper limit is compulsory i.e. when a Junior swimmer reaches G7 they have to
trial for Intermediates, when an Intermediate swimmer reaches G9 they have to
trial for Advanced.
For all squads, the primary factors would be technique, speed, fitness
and attitude. This will likely mean that the higher the squad, the older the
swimmer, but age will not be the primary determining factor. There will be some
overlap. As swimmers improve, they may be moved up to the next squad, initially
on a trial basis.
NB from 2021.22 there will be a qualification time for entry into
squad (SQT). Children must beat at least 3 SQT which can be at 50m and/or 100m
in order to get into/remain in squad. As children move up an age group, they
will need to beat SQT for the new age group.
